A few days ago we got the incredible chance to train with the 4th time Games qualifier Josh Bridges in Reebok Crossfit MeWellness, our box in Shanghai.
We’ll tell you everything about this event organized by 5.11 Tactical x China Invitational x Hunter Gatherer.
From October 18th to the end of the month, one of the favorite CrossFit Games athlete, Josh Bridges, was on a trip through Asia with 5.11 Tactical to promote Crossfit in this expanding fitness market.
After a visit to South Korea, the Powerdot athlete headed to China, Beijing at Crossfit Slash, and then brought the famous WOD Murph to a whole new level in Xian, on the Great Wall, with an event that gathered athletes from 6 affiliates.
He finished his Asian trip on October 26th with an event in Shanghai, organized by 5.11 Tactical x China invitational x Hunter Gatherer.
As the place which hosted the event was our box Reebok Crossfit MeWellness, we had the amazing chance to be part of it!
The event started around 12:00 but Kevin and I arrived earlier so we could have the chance to see Josh Bridges training a bit before the event. We actually saw him warming up with some front squats @300 lbs, and I can tell you, this guy is definitely not kidding!
After a short introduction about his Asian trip, we got down to business and Josh introduced the workout of the day.
First, as a warm-up (which felt like a whole workout for many of us haha), we set up 9 rowers, ski erg, and assault bikes. In teams of 2, we had to complete 10 calories and 10 burpees on each station, for a total of 90 cals + 90 burpees. You can believe me, we were pretty warmed after that!
After the warm-up, we had a quick rest period during which the 5.11 team equipped us with weighted vests (20 lbs for men, 14 lbs for women).
That was the first time I was trying one of these ones and I have to say that it’s the best I’ve tested so far! The vest is not bulky at all in comparison with some others and so comfortable that it’s easy to forget that you’re actually wearing one during your workout.
Then, back to the whiteboard, Josh Bridges announced the (real) workout:
By team of 2 :
1 partner working, other partner will lunge length of floor
Switch ’till complete set:
100 D-Ball Clean
At first sight, you can think « That’s ok, not too many reps, it’s gonna be fast », but when you start the first reps of wall balls combined with the walking lunges, you know it’s gonna be spicier than expected!
Chelsea, my teammate, and I started with a good pace of 15 wall balls each but after 90 reps our legs were on fire! Then we decided to continue with 10 reps each till we reached the total of 150.
After that, I never thought I would be so glad to do pull ups but they were like a relief for my hamstring and quads. With sets of 10 pull-ups each, it was pretty fast to complete the all 100.
Finally, last challenge for our lower body, the D-Ball Clean! Once again, we went by sets of 10-15 and the 100 we reached pretty quickly.
We finished the workout in 25-ish minutes while Josh Bridges and his partner were already done for at least 5 good minutes!
We cheered on the last ones and congratulate each other in really friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
As some time was remaining before the second workout, Josh took some time for a really nice Q&A session that you will find in an upcoming article. All I can tell you is that this guy is super nice and down-on-earth, and it’s really enriching to talk with him.
To conclude this first session of the event, 5.11 Tactical proceeded to a random draw to win some posters and one of their Rush 24 Back Pack.
Well, guess who won this outstanding bag? YEAH!! I was super glad to win it as I was looking for a practical and comfortable backpack for a while. For the moment, I only used it a couple time to go to the gym but I’ll probably write a review after few month of use if you’re interested!
As all good things must finally come to an end, the end of the training session wrapped up around a really nice lunch provided by Hunter Gatherer, one of the best places in Shanghai if you’re looking for a healthy meal with artisanal and organic food.
After that, if all the athletes were enjoying a well-deserved break, the day wasn’t over for Josh Bridges. A second session started with another WOD, and other athletes, including Kevin.
This time, it’s a heavy dumbbell WOD that challenged the 15 athletes :
Team of 3
With a weighted vest (20/14 lbs)
15 GHD Sit-up
20 DB Snatch
25 Hand release Push-up
Kevin’s team completed the WOD with 3 rounds @70 lbs and Josh smashed it with a 100 lbs dumbbells. It was pretty impressive even though we’re used to see its amazing performances on our screens every Crossfit Games edition!
Another Q&A session concluded this amazing day. After that we all left with great memories and tons of motivation to keep on training hard!
