You’ve been doing CrossFit for a couple months or even several years and yet, you still haven’t dared to enter into some competition.
An easy way to make the first step into it is to apply for the Open.
“I’m not strong enough”, “I haven’t been doing CrossFit for long enough”, “I don’t have pull-ups” …
All these excuses are for you a big obstacle to take the plunge and enter Crossfit competitions.
For those who are new to Crossfit and don’t know much about the Opens, it’s basically a five week, five workout competition held at CrossFit affiliates across the world, happening every year between February and March.
The best athletes of each region compete for qualifying spots for the CrossFit Games in July-August, just like did the 4th time qualifier Josh Bridges, that we met few month ago.
The Crossfit Open are perfect for a first experience in competition, here is why you should take the plunge and register for Crossfit Open 2018.
1. Experience the CrossFit community
First of all, far from the unfamiliar stadiums with a crowd full of strangers as in many competitions, you’ll be doing the workouts in your gym.
That means that you’ll have some landmarks as you’ll know the material you’ll be using, and you’ll be working out in a familiar environment (or should I say home!).
Open is also a great way to remind us that we are part of a wonderful international community (and box community on a smaller scale).
Indeed, it’s a moment in the year where all your Crossfit family will be gathered together at the gym to cheer on each other and give their 1000% best.
It’s also the occasion to workout with the entire world! There will be hundreds of thousands of other Crossfitters experiencing the same hardships, triumphs, and sense of achievement that you will.
2. Know you better as an athlete
CrossFit Open is a really good way to know more about your strengths and weaknesses.
You can see it as a test on your fitness and on how much you’ve progressed since you started CrossFit.
All the five workouts are designed to test every part of your fitness and will highlight what you are really good at, but also what you really need to improve to be a better athlete.
Entering the CrossFit Open 2018 will surely uncover a weakness or two (or more, it’s still possible to improve in any area!) for you to work on in the future.
Also, you might have good surprises and achieve things you haven’t even thought you were capable of!
For instance, during the Open, a lot of athletes have their very first muscle-up! Adrenaline can make us do crazy things.
3. Go out of your comfort zone
Stepping out of our comfort zone is always easier said than done! CrossFit Open will provide you with 5 really challenging workouts (because you will make it challenging!), to allow you to test yourself against some of the best athletes in the sport.
It will probably awaken your competitive spirit and challenge your mental toughness as you’ll be going through the workouts.
Yes, maybe this time you’ll push yourself a little bit more than usual!
You are not going to take breaks as soon as it gets hard, or try to go light in the workout because you’re scared, and that’s a good thing.
And remember, if the worst that can happen involves anxiety about scoring and ranking, it’s probably an excess of ego. Just keep in mind to do your best and it will already be a victory.
Basically, if you hesitate to sign in, just do it: the Open is much like a regular day at the box – just a little more fun, you won’t regret it!
